How to make a sensible haircut.

Hair cuts in the Egyptian times were predominantly long, but depended on social class, age, wealth etc. During puberty to young adulthood, a boy would have his head shaved with a nape left on the side to prove their age, a very formal organised society of awareness for maturity in a young man. By the time of the Greeks, hair was still mostly dark and the few blondes were most likely hounded for their evolution in promiscuity, no wonder the 'blonde bimbo' adage. Some Greeks wore gold dust in their hair, whilst some females tried to dye their hair blonde or red, but would get away with floral and decorative motifs in their hair to attract the opposite sex and to feel feminine. Rome saw the eventual rise of the sensible hair-cut.

In Rome they wore their hair in a bowl with a beard for men, unless they were a soldier, and women wore their hair down or up in highly sophisticated braids and knots. This was the chance for people to express themselves with a good amount of phhwoaw attached to a highly virile society! There were outrageous haircuts as well, and some used thickening and wig applications, but you could say this was the beginning of the sensible haircut, which today is very much in! (Unfortunately it was also the beginning of sideburns – not very in at the moment by the way.) Haircuts have begun to become more simple and sensible and less decorative through history, and remained so, despite one rule, the King would always have short hair, often losing his from the stress and strain of regal life.  This is the reason César wore a laurel reath.

Haircuts are at the end of the day an attitude of mind, but the sensible ones remind us of childhood and a brooding nest of shaggy children, running around with mop-tops, all the more hair the better. Afro hair needs an AVEDA touch according to Glamour Magazine, whilst AMBI provides great skin products for the black population. There are cool rips with shaved detailing and we all remember the top cut from Will Smith, not demonstrated quite as well by Carlton, (poor Carlton), on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. There was a movement in 1980's hip-hop towards the side angled projecting quiff or afro, but ultimately it just had to be abstract.  Abstract hair cuts fit in within the realm of the sensible hair cut, but it must be simple.

So what is exactly the sensible hair-cut? It originates in the Roman bowler hair-cut, i.e. a bowl is put on ones head and you cut around the edge, maybe with a fringe, of course for men the short back and sides, and for women, a crop or just long and curly or straight, worn up for work, and down at the weekends. But it is more than that it is ultimately going to make you give off the right amount of pheromones. It will make you feel fit for the day, fit for purpose, and nefariously vixen towards the opposite sex, after all a man is a man and a woman is a woman, so let it be.

High tops for girls are good, preferably with a pair of high tops if they're at that formidable teen age. A high top for mum would be youthful, and a clean shaven shaved head for the older receding gent. At the end of the day we all want to 'keep our hair on', so there are a number of things one can do; they are: Eat omega 3 rich fish, flaxseed oil, walnuts and almonds, Vitamin C as an anti-oxidant is good so eat: blackcurrants, blueberries, broccoli, guava, kiwi fruits, oranges, papaya, strawberries and sweet potatoes, also good are, cinnamon, gooseberries, oatmeal, eggs, lentils, and oysters, and Marmite will fend off the grey hair! Avoid: mercury heavy fish like swordfish, diet soda, sugar, starchy whites, fast-food, and alcohol. I would stick to the foods to avoid first, then slowly build some nutritious snacks of those that help. It is not a haircut that is the problem, it is whether it is sensible or not that is.
