The Community begins as a village becoming a town or City, if it has a university and/or Cathedral. It is discovered by landmarks, reaching for the sky, and low to the ground. The city churches and Cathedrals, orientate us by a West entry, finding East, North and South, like a weathervane chasing the wind. The Civic Centre tends to be in the West, the City Centre in the middle, and the most lucrative houses in the East for early sun pouring through the windows.
The cross of gates, as all Cities in Europe once had from Londinium, to what is Modern Paris, seem to be based on Jerusalem, from the first map, the Mapus Mundi, with it’s similar four gates for the four factions of religion that live there. There are still actual gates in some Cities, like Durham, and Winchester, as signs of the old toll points. Once as an alien to a city you would have to pay to enter.
The people once lived around the walls, in tents, while the King lived inside with his servants and clergy, before Romans began building environmentally efficient houses; to begin to build a hierarchy.
Jointly today we can improve our Cities, by going to a public planning enquiry, designed to take points of local interest, and create a vision for the coming year, with new developer led developments, and architecturally designed. This is to make public realms, more beautiful, safe and virtuous of a better environment.
But Cities began as feuding empires, under one King or Queen, during various conquests to take over a state; with cultures adding their worth from outside the boundaries, and this in some instances caused racial genocide through slavery. For example, the Tartars of Africa entering Italy as servants to Jewish merchants in the 14th C., a long time after Hannibal came with troops, of East Africa, by elephant to nearly defeat the Roman Republic in 210 bc. Hence legislation being passed, in modern day UK, the Modern Slavery Act of 2015, including no slavery, servitude, trafficking of people, nor exploitation in the workplace, or in the streets and public realms, never mind at home. And transparency rules for larger conglomerate companies, to declare safe business.
“Through the ascent of money, as a trust to the bearer, beginning on clay in Mesopotamia, through to the Silver and Gold found by the Spanish Conquistador, in the Andes, of Bolivia, after defeating the Inca army, Bolivian mines were opened for slavery, to form coins and bars.”[i] The rise of Money after Alexander the Great’s quest of the East, began a Roman Empire based on saleable goods in the Europea Kingdom, under Charlemagne.
Therefore, the spirit of community has a hidden material value, without conquest, other than to be better than another person, a fashion. There was very little street conversation, like the great communal meetings of amphitheatre Greece, so everything existed as a top-down triangle, governed by authorities. So while authorities protect us, we amuse ourselves and enjoy a plethora of entertainment. Together we have seen the rise of inclusivity in our Cities, jointly improving them, considering other’s feelings, more than our own, living together with communication, and shared interests. England the humble home of many.
